Rules of the Game

They had talked about it for weeks, over coffee and late at night, laughing and then not laughing. The agreement was simple. For one evening she would set the rules, he would follow them, and either of them could end the game with a single word: guayaba.

Rule one: no touching until I say so

The suite looked out over the old town, all domes and lights. She poured two glasses of wine and sat across from him, far enough away to be maddening. “Tell me what you noticed about me first,” she said, “the night we met.” He told her. She made him describe it slowly, and then more slowly.

Rule two: you only look where I let you

She stood, walked a slow circle around his chair and let her fingertips rest, just barely, on the back of it, never on him. He could feel the warmth of her hand an inch from his shoulder like a promise she was choosing not to keep yet. His breathing changed. She noticed, and smiled.

Rule three: ask nicely

“What do you want?” she asked. He began to answer, and she shook her head. “Ask,” she said. So he asked, softly and carefully, and she made him wait, because waiting was the whole point, and because the look on his face was the best thing she had seen all year.

Somewhere a church bell counted ten. Neither of them said the safe word. Later, wrapped in the hotel’s heavy robes and laughing again, they agreed on one more rule for next time: next time, you choose.

A note from Mood Chillin: the heart of any power-play game is trust. Talk first, agree on limits and a safe word, check in often, and remember that consent can be changed at any moment.
